As many know this new act is now in force and obligates businesses amongst other things to take "reasonable steps" to ensure that their properties can accommodate visitors with a disability. From a simply physical point of view, this does not mean that establishments are going to have to install lifts or external staircases etc as this may not be financially or physically reasonable. Listed buildings are also currently exempt from much of the legislation. Personal discrimination against the disabled by operators or their staff is of course not acceptable and could result in litigation against the offender(s).

What this does mean is that simple things that can be "reasonably" expected to be done such as use of large print menus, special web sites fonts and images, better use of colour contrasts in décor (when next decorating), putting in hand rails etc should be put into effect or considered as part of a phased plan. We would advise all businesses to conduct a self audit and develop a written plan of the things that they can do and set a time frame. This isn’t just about complying with legislation it is also about making your business as competitive as possible and not missing a large market opportunity.

Shropshire Tourism will prioritise those businesses on our search database who have had an independent access inspection conducted. To encourage more businesses to be DDA aware Shropshire Tourism will also accept graded advertisers who have conducted their own disability access self assessment for inclusion of DDA symbols on the web site and in adverts.
