Harvest Barn is part of an ancient wooden-framed building which was constructed some 300 years ago at Manor Farm in Ashford Bowdler. The village, which is in a conservation area, is about one and half miles from the medieval town of Ludlow. Some three years ago the barns at Manor Farm were converted. Conservation regulations demanded that all the oak-pegged timbers should be retained, and now, carefully cleaned and waxed, throughout Harvest Barn they provide a fascinating illustration of the traditional skills of carpenters and joiners working with hand-tools. Ashford Bowdler is a small village surrounded by fields and meadows through which the river Teme runs quietly to join the Severn. A six hundred year-old church, the shingled spire of which has just been restored, stands by the river and is still in regular use. Six miles away Clee Hill can be seen dominating the skyline and beyond it are all the other Shropshire hills, magnificent to view and wonderful for walking.
Church Stretton, "the gateway to the Shropshire Hills", is twelve miles and there are many other historic towns close by - Burford, Stokesay, Much Wenlock, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Ironbridge, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and a World Heritage site, are all an easy 25 mile drive. The jewel of the Shropshire towns, though, is Ludlow. It has been described as "the most beautiful town in England" and the view of the castle walls from the slopes of Whitcliffe is spectacular. The River Teme is noisy here as it runs over its shallow pebble bed giving the town its name which means 'hill beside the loud water'. Ludlow is a planned medieval town which grew up under the protection of the castle on the Welsh borders; it is crammed with superb buildings, both Tudor and Georgian red-brick. More recently Ludlow has become famous for its fine restaurants (at one time there were more Michelin stars in Ludlow than in London), its Summer Festival with open air Shakespeare performances in the castle grounds and its renowned Food Festival where visitors can sample and enjoy all the fine produce of the area.
Although steeped in the history and agricultural traditions of this part of the county, Harvest Barn provides every up-to-date modem comfort. New and old co-exist in every room - a jacuzzi bath finds its place under a 300-year-old beam, there is a washer-dryer and microwave oven beside timbers which have held up the roof of the granary for centuries. Downstairs in the barn there is a comfortable sitting room, with two three-seater sofas, a TV and DVD player, and a newly fitted kitchen/dining room with electric cooker, fridge/ 4-star freezer, washer-dryer and microwave. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, both of which have exposed rafters and beams. The larger bedroom has a double bed and matching bedside cabinets and chest of drawers in traditional pine. The second bedroom has two single beds, contemporary furniture and polished wooden flooring. All bed-linen and bedding are matching and new.
The barn has full oil-fired central heating with radiators in the sitting room, kitchen/dining room and both bedrooms and a heated towel-rail in the bathroom. All fuel costs and bed-linen are included in the price. The enclosed garden has a lawn and a patio with table and chairs and a barbecue. There is parking for several cars. Pets are welcome and we make no extra charge Phone: Anna Hodgson-Blight on 01584 831707 or e-mail annahodgsonb@aol. com for a brochure or further information.
