Happy Birthday Shropshire Assessment Scheme!

Happy Birthday Shropshire Assessment Scheme!

Direct Tourism Services has been delivering its new Accommodation Assessment Scheme on behalf of Shropshire Tourism since April last year. Over 80 assessments have been undertaken and the scheme has achieved a 93% positive satisfaction rating from members.

Shropshire Tourism is the first organisation in the country to introduce a local assessment that works to similar national standards as those used by the AA, Quality in Tourism and other Visit Britain approved organisations.

Catherine Collier, Business Manager at Shropshire Tourism, who manages the scheme said “We have assessed over 80 businesses to date and are delighted with the very positive feedback we have received on the detail and quality of the assessment process itself, as well as the support and advice given by our assessors. Shropshire Tourism recognises that the assessment is more than just checking facilities; our local assessors offer a more supportive and advisory service.”

The Assessment offers businesses an alternative to national schemes such as those run by Visit Britain and the AA. It works to similar standards but is locally delivered and aims to be more efficient, cost competitive and supportive. Accommodation providers are awarded a star grading, a clear indicator of quality to prospective visitors to the county.

Catherine explained, “The county operates a 100% inspected and graded criteria for establishments wishing to become a member of Shropshire Tourism and to advertise in either Shropshire Tourism or district guides and websites, so it pays to be assessed. The national schemes are still encouraged and supported although we are finding that this local scheme is proving increasingly popular. It brings Shropshire Tourism closer to our members and the industry.”

“A national review is currently taking place of all assessment schemes covering those which are locally delivered by county tourism organisations.  The results of this review were due in December 2009 and we are still awaiting the outcome. It is hoped that the quality of this scheme delivered exclusively in Shropshire will be recognised by Visit Britain. In the meantime, the scheme is fully supported by tourism organisations within Shropshire.

The scheme is open to Self Catering and Guest Accommodation – B&B’s, Guest Houses, Farmhouses, Inns, and Restaurants with Rooms.
