Hedgerow Harvest

Want to have a go at jam and cake making using succulent autumn fruits from our hedgerows? Join us on Tuesday 21st September, 9.30am -3pm at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre to find out about hedgerows and the products that we can make from them.

Cath Murphy, Landscape Interpreter, will be our guide for the morning as we head out into Onny Meadows to look in detail at the hedgerows, the different species, their wildlife value, how to age hedgerows and their uses.  We will also have the chance to pick berries from them to use in the afternoon.

Carys Palmer, of Carys Cakes and The Maltings, and Sara Jane Brough, of Ludlow Jam Pan will be leading the cookery sessions in the afternoon highlighting recipes that use hedgerow fruits and take away the fruits of your labour.

This workshop is one of a series of events and activities taking place under the Discover Local project, funded by LEADER in the Shropshire Hills.  Jodie Griffith, from the Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership, explains “The focus is on local and traditional produce, crafts and skills, which help to conserve and enhance the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”

Jodie continued, “The project aims to foster the link between landscape and local products, and through workshops and networking events, encourage people and businesses to better understand and use what the Shropshire Hills has to offer.”

Lunch, locally sourced, will be provided on the day by Carys Palmer and take a free gift home.  Suitable footwear and apron will be needed and booking is essential as places are limited to 12.  Cost is £25 or £20 for concessions and Friends of the Shropshire Hills.
