 Free Wi-Fi tops most popular hotel amenity

An article in Destination UK travel trade magazine caught our eye recently, regarding a survey undertaken by booking website Hotels.com. They asked 5,000 respondents - a combination of both leisure and business guests - which facilities were most important to them when booking a hotel.

30% picked free Wi-Fi, with a complimentary breakfast in second place with 21% of the vote and free parking in third.

Do you offer free Wi-Fi? Whilst this was a survey of hotel amenities, we suggest other types of accommodation and indeed attractions should also be offering free Wi-Fi wherever possible. Apart from the benefit of attracting more technology savvy guests who are increasingly online, there’s the potential added bonus for you - if your guests/visitors can easily get online during their trip, they can promote you on social media in real time - tweet, post Facebook comments, share photos, even write a TripAdvisor review.

According to the survey results, the 10 most popular global hotel amenities are...

  1. Free Wi-Fi (30%)
  2. Breakfast (21%)
  3. Free parking (10%)
  4. Swimming pool (8%)
  5. Luxury mattress (7%)
  6. In room tea/coffee maker (5%)
  7. On-site restaurant (3%)
  8. High end-linens (3%)
  9. Hair dryer (3%)
  10. 10.  Room service (2%)

The survey also found three quarters of respondents thought mini-bars were the most disappointing amenity, not worth the hype, followed by a turndown service.

46% of British guests voted for bacon and sausages as their favourite breakfast food offering, while only 20% chose the healthier fresh fruit option.
