Credit AND Debit Card Surcharge Ban in UK

Credit AND Debit Card Surcharge Ban in UK

Earlier this year the Government announced a new law taking effect as of the 13th January 2018 that means businesses will no longer be allowed to add any surcharges for payments made by card. This means that as of the start of the year, any surcharge that is added to bills for payments that are made by card must be taken off.

This new law follows the European Union directive to ban surcharges on payments from all Visa and Mastercard Cards. However the government have ordered further bans on American Express and Paypal as well.

This is a good news to consumers, however we suggest any businesses that currently have surcharges in place ensure they have their tariff/charges in place by January 2018.
