Celebrating Anniversaries in 2009

There are 3 key anniversaries that the whole of Shropshire will be celebrating in 2009, they are:

  • 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, born in Shrewsbury
  • 150th anniversary of the publication of 'Origin of Species'
  • 200th anniversary of the birth of William Penny Brookes founder of the modern Olympics in Much Wenlock
  • 300th anniversary of the smelting of iron with coke at Coalbrookdale, Ironbridge

It is also the 150th anniversary of the birth of A.E. Housman - famous for 'A Shropshire Lad' (although he was not born in Shropshire he wrote about the county and is burried in Ludlow).

Shropshire Tourism will be promoting these special birthdays throughout the 2009 marketing campaigns, visit the dedicated website: www.shropshireanniversaries.co.uk and feel free to link to this website from your own websites.
