Description

Converted barn, adjoining owners cottage, set in large landscaped garden, in hamlet by River Onny, between Long Mynd and Stiperstones. Pubs (good food) and shop within walking distance.

Walkmill is well situated to explore the the Welsh border country - the "Blue Remembered Hills" made famous by the poet Housman and the novelist Mary Webb and rich in legend and folklore.

Set in the South Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the cottage nestles in the Onny Valley, which divides the Stiperstones and Longmynd ranges, providing plentiful opportunities for rambling and bird watching.

The holiday unit faces south towards a large landscaped garden (over an acre in extent) which runs down to the river and adjoining pasture land. Holidaymakers are at liberty to enjoy the garden, which with its wide variety of trees and shrubs, part cultivated and part wild, provides interest, beauty and seclusion through the changing seasons.

The accommodation is compact, being ideal for a couple or a couple with one child. The 'front' door opens onto a small dining kitchen equipped with electric cooker, microwave and refrigerator, from which access is obtained to the beamed and vaulted lounge with colour TV and Radio/CD player. Here a spacious feeling is obtained through the balustraded 'minstrels' gallery and full height end walls, whose windows overlook the patio with outdoor furniture and gardens. A step down provides access to the walk-in shower room with toilet and basin.

The sleeping accommodation which occupies the roof space (beware low flying purlins!) is accessed from a timber staircase which ascends from the kitchen. The landing area has space for a single bed, clothes hanging and storage and is curtained off from the double bedroom with its open gallery, roof lights and authentic 'arrowslit' windows.

Background (oil-fired) central heating is provided from the owner's home and there are additional electric panel heaters, as required. All fuel, power and bed-linen is included in the rental prices.

The cottage is roughly equidistant from Ludlow and Shrewsbury (15 miles) and well placed for excursions via Churchstoke into Mid Wales (Powis Castle, 30 mins). Within walking distance are 3 inns which serve good food and drink. 'The Crown', up the hill in Wentnor village, the ancient 'Sun Inn' in nearby Norbury and only 400 yds away, 'The Inn on the Green'. Opposite the latter is the village Post Office and Stores, only 5 minutes walk whilst the quaint market town of Bishop's Castle (5 miles) has a range of craft and specialist shops as well as the nearest petrol station.
